A 66-year-old Nanaimo man was rushed to hospital on Friday after he was struck by a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway.

According to Mounties, the driver of a Pontiac Wave was travelling northbound on the highway near Petroglyph Park just after 6 p.m. when he noticed a person crouched over in the middle of his lane.

He couldn’t move over because of a vehicle in the passing lane.

The motorist was unable to stop in time before he hit the 66-year-old, police say.

The pedestrian was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital where he is being treated for two broken legs and back injuries.

The accident shut down the northbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway for nearly four hours.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, according to RCMP.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
