A derelict boat was removed from a beach in Saanich Tuesday morning after it washed up there about eight months ago.

Crews used a crane to transfer the 25-foot sailboat called the Odin from Cadboro Bay beach to Killarney Road.

It was then loaded into a container and taken to the Hartland Landfill for disposal.

The cost for removal and disposal is approximately $6,000.

The director of engineering with Saanich said the district has been dealing with derelict vessels for the past couple of years.

“Last year we spent up to $50,000 removing derelict boats. We’re fortunate this year this is the first boat that we’ve had to deal with on the Cadboro Bay beach,” Harley Machielse said.

As for the delay with its removal, Machielse said council deals with derelict boats on a case by case basis.

“With any boats being removed it’s not part of our regular routine piece of work that we do, therefore that takes time to plan for each boat that needs to be removed,” Machielse said. “Also it involves multiple jurisdictions and that takes time.”

The district also tries to track down property owners before removing the boats, which it was unable to do in the Odin case.
