Construction on a major South Island highway will get underway Monday, and motorists are advised to expect delays for months.

Work on the Pat Bay Highway near Elk Lake, between Sayward and Haliburton roads, is expected to be complete in early fall.

Upgrades include repaving a stretch of about three kilometres on the route, and the introduction of safety improvements at Cordova Bay Road that will allow  right-turn-in, right-turn-out only from that street.

The Ministry of Transportation says traffic lights at the Sayward and Haliburton intersections will be adjusted as needed.

Most of the work will take place at night when traffic is light, and no work will occur on holiday weekends.

Drivers are asked to give themselves extra time to get where they need to go, and watch for construction workers and speed limits.
