Colouring books for adults are one of publishing’s most popular products and the latest book to hit shelves is bringing British Columbia’s coast to life.

Colour the British Columbia Coast is Yvonne Maximchuk’s first colouring book. It depicts original illustrations of British Columbia’s land, sea, wildlife and coastal activities.

“Just about everybody who lives in B.C. thinks it’s pretty special and I certainly think that. I’m familiar with so many aspects, I’ve travelled a lot and I’ve been to sea and I’ve been to Haida Gwaii,” Maximchuk said. “There is nowhere that is not remarkably unique and gloriously beautiful.”

Maximchuk also included artist’s tips in the book for those who want to learn more about colour and art terminology.

“I really wanted it to have content and I wanted people to be able to learn more, look at different books or look at websites that had to do with the coast and take them deeper into it,” Maximchuk told CTV News.

Adult colouring books have soared in popularity, many people seeing it as an opportunity to relax and take a break from technology.

“It’s contemplative and I think that’s nice for everybody, not just me. I think when I colour I just enjoy myself, I’m just happy, peaceful. I don’t think about all the things that I have to do," Maximchuk said.

The colouring book is published by Harbour Publishing and available online as well as several bookstores up and down the island, including Russell Books in Victoria.

There is also a colouring contest. Anyone who wants to enter is asked to submit their coloured creation, which has to be one of the pages from the book, on social media using the hashtag #colourthebccoast.

Two winners will receive a copy of the book as well as a page coloured by the artist. The contest has been extended until July 31.
