Crews got to work in Victoria’s Inner Harbour Wednesday to repair eight existing navigation aids in an effort to shore up marine safety.

For the next two weeks, the Canadian Coast Guard is performing work in the harbour that includes demolition of existing structures, pouring new concrete foundations and installing new navigation towers.

Work will also include replacing ladders and adding handrails and guardrails to structures.

People should expect to see a surge of traffic in the harbour as a number of barges, cranes, excavators and tug boats complete the work.

According to the Coast Guard, the repairs will improve navigational service for mariners and improve safety for workers who maintain the structures.

Work will take place at existing structures including those on Berens Island, Shoal Point, Pelly Island and Laurel Point.
