The town of View Royal celebrated the official grand opening of a new retail and residential hub on Saturday morning.

Eagle Creek Village, across from Victoria General Hospital, includes a medical clinic, pharmacy, Quality Foods, liquor store and housing units.

Saturday’s celebration featured line dancing lessons and a variety of draws.

View Royal’s mayor said the development is a big deal for the community and hopes it will encourage more development around the hospital.

“I think it’s the epitome of smart growth and the second phase will be 160 condominium units,” David Screech said. “It’s close to the Galloping Goose trail, it’s close to transit. It’s an ideal spot.”

People who attended the event were also impressed with the new space.

“I think it’s great, especially this area. There’s not a lot of commercial space around,” one woman told CTV News.

At the grand opening, Eagle Creek Village presented the Victoria hospital’s foundation with a $5,000 cheque.

The foundation said it will support patient care equipment at Victoria General Hospital.
