A northern Manitoba First Nations community is under lockdown following a fatal shooting. Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias said in a statement and video posted to social media Saturday morning that RCMP are investigating a “serious incident in our community involving gunfire.” One person has been confirmed dead. In a news release sent late Saturday, RCMP said they were notified about a man with serious injuries on the main road of the community at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Friday. When they arrived, two people were found at the scene. A 42-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound and declared dead at the scene. The other man was not harmed. RCMP are still searching for the suspect, who they believe is known to the victims and may still be in the community. A description of the suspect was not provided by RCMP. Monias’ post said due to the ongoing investigation, all events as part of Treaty and Indian Days, which were taking place over the weekend, have been cancelled until further notice and residents are advised to stay indoors. Residents are urged to lock their doors and windows, not allow children to play outside or wander around unsupervised and not open their doors to anyone they don’t know or trust. “Your safety is our top priority. This lockdown is a precautionary measure to protect every member of our community while police conduct their investigation,” the post reads. Residents are being asked to cooperate with law enforcement if they do come to their home and report suspicious activity to RCMP at 204-676-2345 or call 911 if it’s an emergency
