Windsor, Ont. pediatrician suspended for accessing newborn information

A Windsor, Ont. pediatrician is now suspended for accessing newborn information.

Dr. Omar Afandi cannot practice medicine for eight months, according to a decision by the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The Discipline Tribunal ruled on June 3, 2026, that Dr. Afandi “...committed the following act of professional misconduct.”

In their decision, posted online, the CPSO found Afandi “exploited and abused” his position of trust “for your own financial gain.”

Dr. Afandi has already admitted to accessing the contact information for the parents of 146 newborn patients between April 18 and May 7, 2024.

“You also transferred [contact information] to your personal cellphone and used it to contact patients for the purposes of soliciting clinical work that was not covered by OHIP,” the decision reads.

“This was premeditated conduct. In acting in this manner, you engaged in conduct that is disgraceful, dishonourable, and unprofessional.”

In addition to the suspension of privileges, Dr. Afandi must also reimburse the CPSO $6,000 for their costs in managing the complaints.

Afandi has already paid an $8,000 fine to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
