University of Windsor’s 3D-printed residence has been indefinitely stalled. Purported to be Canada’s first net-zero, multi-storey student residence, the building was scheduled to be complete this fall. However, there is no activity at the 1025 California Avenue property. Officials with the University of Windsor declined two requests for an interview with CTV. This is their statement on the project in its entirety: The University of Windsor’s 3D-printed multi-storey residence is at the municipal occupancy approval stage. The building technology is breaking new ground, and while its materials have been tested and exceed current safety standards, they have not yet been formally incorporated into the Building Code for a structure of this type. The University is working with project partners to advance that process. When CTV News sent a list of nine detailed questions about the project, the University would only write, “We can confirm that research associated with the project remains ongoing.” The City of Windsor building department confirmed they have met with the University and have offered options for how to make the project comply with the building code. Officials at City Hall also confirm the project has a valid construction permit which has not yet expired. All of the companies affiliated with the project declined to speak with CTV News about the project, deferring all questions back to the University. The university received $2 million in August 2025 from FedDev Ontario for the project. A release at the time said the project “… demonstrates how technology, research, and collaboration can help address housing challenges while advancing environmental sustainability.” Officials with the government agency said their role in the project concluded in March 2026 and deferred all questions about the project’s future to the University of Windsor. During an interview with CTV News in December 2025, the university still did not have a final cost for the project. Some three-dimensional printed concrete was already in place at that time, but it has since been removed along with the tower structure used to place the concrete. The foundation for the building remains in place at the site, as do construction materials but the university won’t say how much has been spent or when the project might resume.
