Detroit police detain 180 youths during fireworks night under curfew

Detroit police say they detained 180 youths during the city’s annual fireworks night as a strict curfew for unaccompanied minors was enforced.

The curfew was announced well in advance of the event in an effort to curb the violence and mischief the Motor City has experienced during the fireworks show in previous years.

Of the juveniles detained, police said 171 were Detroit residents, while nine were from outside the city.

Police said 108 of those detained were boys and 72 were girls.

Officers also made 19 additional arrests during the event. Twelve were for carrying a concealed weapon, including two juveniles. The remaining seven arrests were for offences such as resisting arrest, assault and disorderly conduct.
