Welcome back spring! We’ve missed you.

Ok, so our weather hasn’t been as bad as what they’ve endured in eastern Canada, but I think we can all agree that, despite the few moments of warm sunshine in between, the start to spring on Vancouver Island has been less than fabulous.

In fact, it has rained EVERY SINGLE DAY (except April 2) in Victoria this month! From a trace of precipitation to many millimetres per day, the rain gauge at Victoria Airport has been working overtime. The average amount of rainfall in YYJ in April is 47.9mm. That’s for the whole month. To date, YYJ has had 80.2mm of rain – and we’ve got two weeks to go! Sigh.

That said, after yesterday’s rain today’s sunshine is a welcome change in Greater Victoria.

While there’s still a slight chance of showers for the Capital Region, and radar indicates a few may shower the downtown area after lunch, most of the day will be dry. North of the Malahat the risk of rain increases, however sunshine should break through at times in many communities.

Temperatures should be a little warmer than yesterday, but still below seasonal average. Isolated showers are expected Wednesday morning, but the sun should come out again in the afternoon, and temperatures will warm up a little bit more.

Thursday looks sunny with some cloudy periods and pleasant temperatures as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area. Finally, a day with afternoon highs warming to close to normal in Greater Victoria: 13°C!

As the ridge moves east Thursday night, the next system approaches Vancouver Island. Friday will be pretty rainy as a result. The rain starts in the morning along the northwest coast, spreading southeastward.

futurecast

Victoria will have some rain starting in the afternoon. How quickly this system moves through will determine how quickly the rain dries up. I’d expect a few lingering showers on Saturday in the wake of the front. Winds will also pick up Saturday as the system passes.

Looking ahead, another ridge of high pressure will build in time for the second half of the weekend. If all goes to plan, the island will see dry and milder weather Sunday through Monday. Can’t wait!
