Five-minute commutes turned into more than thirty-minute headaches as a bridge closure caused traffic chaos in Victoria Wednesday.

The new Johnson Street Bridge shut down for a planned closure from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. so crews could continue their work dismantling the old bridge.

While drivers were warned about the closure, it still created a log-jam for those trying to get from one side of the harbour to the other.

The Bay Street Bridge was majorly backed up, with some drivers reporting their trips were delayed by as much as 30 minutes.

Some cyclists and drivers who spoke with CTV News were taking the closure in stride, but others were clearly frustrated.

"Terrible, and it's always terrible at this time. It's not getting better," said one driver.

"I'm not a big fan. I have to take a big detour," said a cyclist. "It's a little scary with all the traffic because the cars are being a bit pushy today."

The new Johnson Street Bridge reopened at 4 p.m. just in time for rush hour.

The work on the old bridge isn't over yet. The city said the new bridge will close again at 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday night as workers try to make up for Monday's wind delays.

It will shut down again from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, so drivers should be prepared for more bumper-to-bumper delays.
