Woman killed in Nanaimo crash; RCMP seek witnesses and dash cam video

Police are asking for witnesses after a fatal two-vehicle crash in Nanaimo on Sunday evening.

The collision happened just after 6 p.m. on June 21 at the intersection of Nanaimo Parkway and Island Highway South, involving a Kia SUV and an Acura sedan, RCMP told CTV News.

A woman driving the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the Kia SUV were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP confirmed the Acura had been travelling west on Cedar Road before entering the intersection, while the Kia SUV was on Nanaimo Parkway at the time of the crash.

Next of kin have been notified.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) is assisting with the investigation. RCMP say ICARS is routinely called in to help reconstruct serious crashes.

“They have advanced knowledge and techniques in understanding collision scenes and extracting forensic evidence, we rely on them heavily to put the pieces back together,” said Const. Gary O’Brien

Investigators say they are still working to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash and have not ruled anything out, including driver behaviour, road conditions or mechanical issues.

“There is no timeline on investigations,” O’Brien said. “We follow the evidence, sometimes it’s harder to get evidence, but we’re confident that we’re moving forward.”

Police say investigators are focusing on vehicle movements in the minutes before the crash, particularly along Cedar Road and through the intersection between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and are seeking dash camera footage.
