Duncan Days Grande Parade cancelled for 2026

Another community event on Vancouver Island is falling victim to rising costs and a lack of volunteer support. The Duncan Days Grande Parade has been cancelled after organizers say rising delivery costs, safety requirements and limited sponsorship mean its not longer viable.

The sound of marching bands won’t be rolling down Duncan’s streets this July, and the usual crowds won’t be lining downtown sidewalks for one of the Cowichan Valley’s most celebrated summer traditions.

The Duncan Days Grande Parade has been cancelled for 2026.

The Duncan-Cowichan Festival Society says the decision follows months of planning that ultimately ran into financial pressures, increased safety requirements and not enough volunteer and sponsorship support to move the event forward.

In a statement on social media Duncan Cowichan Festival Society president Jeff Downie said the event has traditionally relied on strong volunteer involvement, but that model has become increasingly difficult to sustain.

“Over the past several months, the society has worked diligently to organize this year’s event. However, escalating event delivery costs, increasingly complex operational and safety requirements, and limited sponsorship support have created challenges that make it impossible to deliver the parade at the standard of safety, quality, and community experience that participants and spectators deserve,” he said.

The parade, scheduled for July 11, has long been a centrepiece of Duncan’s summer festivities, bringing together community groups, performers and spectators downtown. Its cancellation leaves a gap in the city’s summer lineup.

Across Vancouver Island, long-running community parades are under increasing pressure as rising costs, insurance requirements and expanded safety planning change how large public events are delivered.

In Victoria, the Victoria Day Parade was shortened and rerouted this year as organizers adjusted to updated safety guidelines and operational demands. In Esquimalt this year, the Buccaneer Days parade was cancelled due to regulatory changes. Organizers hope to bring back the parade in 2027.

While the parade will not go ahead, the 39 Days of July festival will continue this summer with free performances and community events across downtown Duncan.

Organizers say they will now consider what a future version of the parade could look like, with an emphasis on long-term sustainability.

Downie thanked volunteers, sponsors and community partners for their support over the years, saying their contributions have been central to the parade’s place in the community.
