Cherry Creek fire destroys home, triggers large response

What started as a report of a brush fire late Sunday night quickly escalated into a much larger and more dangerous situation near Cherry Creek, prompting a co-ordinated response from fire departments across the region.

Just before 9:30 p.m. on June 28, the Cherry Creek Fire Department says crews were first called to what appeared to be a rapidly spreading outdoor fire. But by the time firefighters were en route, the situation had already changed—the flames had moved into a nearby structure and were beginning to threaten surrounding homes.

When crews arrived, they were met with an active house fire that had already extended into nearby dry vegetation. Wind-driven embers were pushing the fire outward, raising concerns that additional properties could be impacted.

“Water supply presented a significant challenge. The nearest hydrant was located a considerable distance from the incident, and a traditional engine to engine relay was not practical due to the terrain, numerous turns, elevation changes, and overall distance,”

“A dedicated water supply group was established to shuttle water to Engine 31 and ensure a sustained and adequate supply throughout the operation,” Cherry Creek Fire Department said in a social media post.

Several departments were called in to help, with firefighters arriving from across the valley to support suppression efforts. The co-ordinated response allowed crews to bring the fire under control, extinguish hot spots, and soak surrounding vegetation to reduce the risk of rekindling.

One home was destroyed in the fire and no injuries were reported.

“The fire remains under investigation and is believed to be human-caused and accidental in nature,” said the Cherry Creek Fire Department.

Officials credited the rapid mutual aid response for preventing further destruction, noting that without co-ordinated support from multiple departments, the outcome could have been significantly worse.
