A Vancouver Island man arrested in June was handed multiple drug trafficking charges last week. According to the Combined Special Forces Unit of B.C.—a joint anti-gang policing force that works with local agencies across the province—officers from the unit’s Uniform Gang Enforcement Team were in Port Alberni on June 13 when they encountered the man. Police said he was connected to a “motor vehicle infraction” observed while officers were on patrol, and he ran from police before the Port Alberni RCMP arrested him. “Officers located suspected drugs that were consistent with drug trafficking and also seized cash and a weapon,” the CFSEU-BC said in a release issued Friday afternoon. “The man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for purpose of trafficking and flight from a peace officer.” Police said they continued investigating the man’s drug trafficking activity after his arrest and eventually executed a search warrant at his home, where they found a gun and additional drugs. On Oct. 29, the CFSEU-BC said, 38-year-old Corey Lee Joseph Pouliot was charged with one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine. Online court records show Pouliot remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Port Alberni on Nov. 17.
