Suspect arrested after graffiti memorial painted in B.C. provincial park

Police say a suspect has been arrested after graffiti memorializing a drowning victim was spray-painted onto boulders at Golden Ears Provincial Park near Vancouver.

The vandalism was apparently intended as a tribute, but it sparked widespread outrage after photos and videos of the painted rocks were shared online.

In a statement Monday, the Maple Ridge RCMP said the alleged suspect had surrendered to authorities and was subsequently released on a promise to appear in court.

“Such acts can harm the environment, diminish the experience of other park users, and create unnecessary cleanup cost for the community,” the RCMP detachment said in an earlier statement about the incident.

“We extend our sympathies to the family and the friends of the man who drowned and encourage those wishing to pay respects to do so through appropriate, legal means.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are working with the Ministry of Environment and Parks, which is conducting its own investigation into the matter.

The area of Gold Creek where the graffiti is located has been the site of multiple deaths and injuries over the years due to dangerous currents and a waterfall.

“Maple Ridge RCMP recognizes the significant public interest in this matter and understands the concerns expressed by residents and park users,” the detachment said.

“While the investigation progresses, the public is encouraged to avoid drawing conclusions until all the facts have been fully examined.”
