Stranded climbers rescued from mountain near Squamish, B.C.

It was a busy weekend for search and rescue teams on the North Shore and in the Sea to Sky region, including for volunteers in Squamish, who were called for help four times on Saturday.

One such call was to rescue two stranded climbers from Tricouni Peak, after the pair went off route while repelling and one of them fell and injured her back.

At the request of Squamish Search and Rescue, North Shore Rescue sent a helicopter and hoist operator equipped with night vision goggles.

Rescuers lowered themselves to the climbers in the dark and hoisted them into the helicopter before flying them to Squamish Airport, NSR recounted in a social media post.

At the same time, NSR volunteers were called to help two hikers stuck in the dark on Dog Mountain trail.

Earlier in the day, Squamish SAR and NSR worked together to hoist out an individual in cardiac distress below a waterfall near Britannia Beach.

Also on Saturday, Squamish crews were called to help a climber on Sky Pilot Mountain who sustained serious injuries after falling into a moat.

A social media post from SSAR says the young woman was hoisted out with help from Blackcomb Helicopters.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue volunteers were also called for help Saturday, after a 64-year-old solo hiker on Mount Unnecessary became exhausted and was unable to continue. She was helicoptered to safety.

“As we move into the first days of summer and temperatures continue to rise, LBSAR would like to remind outdoor enthusiasts to be aware of the risks of dehydration and heat-related illness,” the organization wrote in a social media post.

“The Howe Sound Crest Trail and surrounding alpine routes are notorious for having limited water sources, and many streams and seasonal trickles are already beginning to dry up and can no longer be relied upon.”

The organization recommends carrying plenty of water and electrolyte supplements, to hike with a partner or group, and to turn around if experiencing symptoms of dehydration or heat exhaustion.

On Sunday, Squamish SAR was tasked with helping an injured person at Shannon Falls Pools, where the organization says there have been numerous incidents in recent years.

“As we head into another busy summer season, we strongly encourage everyone to use caution when exploring the backcountry and popular recreation areas,” the team wrote.
