Vancouver police say a suspect remains at large after a man’s pant leg was randomly set on fire while he sat on a park bench near English Bay early Wednesday. The department says the 57-year-old victim was sitting alone near Beach Avenue and Davie Street around 12:45 a.m., when an unknown person approached him. “Without warning or provocation, the suspect threw a liquid accelerant onto the victim’s pant leg and ignited it with a lighter before fleeing the scene,” police wrote in a statement. “No words or threats were exchanged prior to the assault.” Police say the victim stamped out the fire and was not injured. Officers looked in the area but didn’t find the suspect—who police described as about 5’8” to 5’10” with an “average build” and wearing dark clothes and something white around his neck. “This was a completely unprovoked, random attack,” Const. Darren Wong said in the statement, urging anyone with information to call 604-717-3321.
