With just a click – you can get a ride or order a bite. But some Uber users in Metro Vancouver say the company is delivering an unexpected charge—signing them up for its premium service Uber One without them ever agreeing to it. “I didn’t really think about it until it started recurring over and over again,” Keith Dallas told CTV News on Wednesday. “I just saw the name Uber. So I was like, I trust Uber.” Dallas showed CTV News credit card statements showing a $10.49 charge for Uber One. Initially he said while casually reviewing his credit card statements, he saw the company’s name and assumed he’d taken a ride. But when he checked his statement during a month where he knew he hadn’t taken a ride, he started looking closer. He realized he had been charged for four months and that a relative had been charged the fee for at least a year. Dallas said Uber agreed to refund him one month but would not go further than that. “Violated,” Dallas said when asked how the situation made him feel. “Violated. You give your card out and you trust Uber, and then they tack this on.” Dallas started to wonder if anybody else he knew was also getting hit with the fee. A friend in Maple Ridge, Shyne Taghvaei, confirmed to Dallas that he was also being billed for Uber One despite saying he did not sign up for the service. “I had actually had no idea until Keith brought it to my attention and then I went and looked into my Uber app and I noticed that not only myself had been charged and my wife as well. I haven’t even had the chance to go back to how long they’ve been charging us but it’s quite shocking,” Taghvaei said. There are many social media posts from people claiming to have had similar experiences, and there have been reports from around the country and in other parts of the world with people sharing similar stories. “I went to Reddit and it’s just all down Reddit. ‘they did this to me too, they did this to me too,’” Dallas said while sharing what he saw online. Uber told CTV News it couldn’t comment on Dallas’s case by deadline but insists users can only be signed up for Uber One by giving consent and says its reviews when questions arise “consistently confirm this.” Dallas rejects the suggestion he knowingly signed up for Uber One. He says Uber users should examine their credit card statements closely, saying he will consider using alternatives for a ride in future.
