B.C. man gets $7K fine, 3-year hunting ban for illegally killing moose

A man from B.C.’s Lower Mainland has received a fine and a hunting ban after admitting to the illegal killing of a moose, conservation officers announced Tuesday.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says it began investigating after reports of a covered up partial bull moose carcass being found south of Fort Nelson, B.C., on Klua Lake Road.

Several charges were laid, and Wing Kam Lau pleaded guilty to hunting a moose outside of open season and failing to report the kill, according to the BCCOS. The Wildlife Act violations occurred in the fall of 2022.

Lau’s sentence included a $6,998 fine, paid to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, and a three-year ban on hunting in B.C. He also must forfeit any wildlife parts to the Crown.

“The BCCOS would like to thank the public for reporting information to the RAPP line and the Northern Rockies RCMP for their prompt assistance to ensure evidence was collected and preserved,” the agency wrote in a social media post.
