Crews battling fire at Brampton scrap metal yard

Fire crews are battling a large fire at a scrap metal yard in Brampton. Officials are asking residents to avoid the area near Intermodal and Goreway Drives.

Crews are fighting a fire at a scrap metal yard in Brampton, Ont.

The yard is located near Intermodal and Goreway drives. Peel police say emergency crews were called to the property at 4:22 p.m.

Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) posted a photo on social media showing thick black smoke billowing from the property.

Images from Chopper 24 show heavy flames tearing through mountains of scrap.

The smoke can also be seen from Pearson International Airport. Operations at the airport have not been impacted by the fire.

BFES said no injuries have been reported.

The cause, origin and circumstances of the fire are unknown.

Peel police said heavy smoke is reducing visibility on the road, causing delays.

Intermodal Drive is closed west of Goreway Drive as a result.

“We’ve seen some heavy congestion, and as well we’re working with our GTAA partners to ensure they’re aware of the smoke visibility for any approaching aircraft as well,” Peel police media relations officer Tyler Bell said in an interview with CP24.

Police are asking motorists and nearby residents to avoid the area as firefighting operations are ongoing.

“This is not the type of scene where you want to go and get a closer look. We don’t know what’s burning. We don’t know how toxic that smoke is. I mean, it’s never good when it’s, when it’s dark smoke like that to begin with,” Bell said.

He added that drivers stuck in traffic in the area should keep their windows closed.
