Toronto police say two officers are in hospital after a vehicle involved in an auto theft investigation in Rexdale crashed into their cruiser early Thursday morning. In a post on social media, police said officers responded to the area of Islington Avenue and Elmhurst Drive at 2:30 a.m. for reports that someone was breaking into a parked vehicle. When they arrived on scene, police said, the officers observed two vehicles fleeing the area. At that time, one of the vehicles collided with a police car. It’s unclear if the suspect vehicle involved in the crash was stolen. Police said two officers were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested and transported to hospital with undisclosed injuries. Responding officers briefly pursued the second vehicle, police said, but that vehicle fled the area and remains outstanding at this time. No suspect description has been released. Images from the scene showed that the suspect vehicle that collided with police rolled over as a result of the crash. The identity of the suspect in custody has not been released. Elmhurst Drive is closed between Islington and Turpin avenues. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes.
