The driver who is wanted for last month’s hit-and-run in the city’s west end that seriously injured a female pedestrian has turned himself in. Toronto police provided the update in a news release on Friday. The collision happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the area of Lansdowne and Brandon avenues. Police said a 34-year-old woman was walking at a signalized pedestrian crossing when a five-door white hatchback travelling at a high rate of speed struck her. The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Police said the driver fled the scene. The hatchback was located a few days later. On Friday, the driver, 52-year-old Joao Cabral of Toronto, surrendered to police and was arrested. He has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm and obstruct justice. Cabral is also facing two charges under the Highway Traffic Act: careless driving causing bodily harm or death and driving a motor vehicle without a licence.
