Ontario Premier Doug Ford is set to provide an update Friday on the province’s response to the growing wildfire emergency in northern Ontario following days of deteriorating air quality that has blanketed much of southern Ontario.

Ford will be joined by Emergency Preparedness and Response Minister Jill Dunlop and Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris for remarks focused on firefighting efforts, evacuations and support for affected communities.

The update comes after smoke from wildfires pushed Toronto to the top of global air pollution rankings earlier this week where at one point, the city was ranked as having the worst air quality in the world, according to IQAir.

Those conditions worsened on Thursday, when Toronto reached the agency’s highest “hazardous” rating before improving slightly Friday to the red “unhealthy” category.

On Friday, Environment Canada is warning that wildfire smoke will continue to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility across the region, with conditions expected to slightly improve before the weekend.
