A push to install surveillance cameras along the Malahat Highway in an effort to curb speeding drivers has shifted into a new gear.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has voted in favour of working with the Capital Regional District to lobby the provincial government for interval speed cameras on the Malahat.

The highway is notorious for some drivers who treat it like a speedway, despite the constant presence of police speed traps and road safety campaigns.

The cameras would be installed at fixed positions and would record licence plates, as well as the time it takes vehicles to travel from one point to another.

If a vehicle is found to be travelling too fast, the driver is automatically mailed a speeding ticket.

The CVRD and CRD expect to send a joint letter to the province this week for its approval.
