A Victoria sidewalk collapsed into a construction site and threatened vehicles parked nearby Friday morning.

Crews responded after a water main burst and the sidewalk collapsed at Cook and Johnson streets before noon.

Victoria police and City of Victoria crews were on scene blocking the area off to traffic.

Drivers were asked to use alternate routes and pedestrians were still able to use the sidewalk on the south side of Johnson Street, according t othe city.

BC Transit buses were also rerouted off of Johnson Street.

Nearby vehicles were reportedly towed out of the way so they didn't fall into the hole.

The sidewalk collapsed into an excavated construction site for The Wade condominiums.

A security fence surrounding the perimeter also fell into the hole.
