A Saskatoon mother and daughter say they were left in shock after a Canada Post truck crashed into their Fairhaven home Wednesday afternoon. Deana Zimmerman-Hernandez and her daughter, Vashti, were getting ready for lunch when they saw the truck heading straight for their house. “Adrenaline was really rushing through our bodies,” Vashti said. “We were all in shock the whole time, including the driver,” Zimmerman-Hernandez said. Security footage shows the truck turning in the cul-de-sac before crashing into the house. Zimmerman-Hernandez called her brother, Tim Zimmerman, who owns the home. He said he was confused when he heard that a postal truck had hit the house, initially thinking it might have backed into the building. “When I got here, it was quite a surprise,” he said. The crash also caught the attention of next-door neighbours Chris and Aliceson Mysiorek. “It was like a big bang,” Chris Mysiorek said. He went outside to investigate and saw a truck across the street, initially thinking it was responsible for the loud bang. About 15 minutes later, a neighbour came out and showed them what had happened, he said. “My first reaction was not really understanding what had happened,” Aliceson Mysiorek said, adding that she initially thought people were joking about the crash. In a statement, Canada Post said it was aware of the incident and took road safety very seriously. “As there is an active police investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further,” the statement said. Police said they were called to the 100 block of Barber Place around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a collision involving a delivery vehicle and a house. The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported, police said. Police said neither impairment nor a medical emergency is believed to have contributed to the crash. The driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention. The home was temporarily patched up as the family waited for contractors to arrive. Despite the damage, the family said it had received an outpouring of support from the community. “Just overall feeling really blessed with our neighbourhood, our family who came together to help reconstruct it, our friends who came to help and our church community as well,” Vashti said. It was a day the family never expected and one they won’t soon forget. “You can’t predict anything,” Zimmerman-Hernandez said.
