This Saskatoon French-language school is falling apart, and the NDP says Moe is to blame

A portion of the ceiling has collapsed inside Saskatoon’s French-language school.

In a letter sent to parents on Monday, the principal of École Canadienne-française said an incident occurred in the school’s library, where “a portion of the ceiling partially detached.”

The principal says no students were in the library at the time, and no one was hurt.

As a precaution, the library will remain closed until further notice.

Conseil des écoles fransaskoises (CÉF), the school division for French-language public schools, says specialized engineers have inspected the area.

“They confirm that the element involved, originating from a remnant of the former school, poses no structural risk and that the safety of students and staff is not compromised,” the school division told CTV News in an email.

CÉF says preventative inspections are now underway in other areas of the building.

This is the second major roof-related issue at the school in recent years.

In 2023, parts of the school were impacted by roof leaks and water damage.

The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the provincial government to take responsibility for the school’s infrastructure issues.

“These are challenges that the Sask. Party government has known about. They don’t appear to care. They haven’t listened and they haven’t taken any action,” NDP MLA Matt Love said outside the school.

The Ministry of Education says the health and safety of students and staff is its top priority.

In a statement to CTV News, the province said CÉF receives annual funding through the Preventative Maintenance and Renewal Program to address infrastructure projects. School divisions decide how the money gets spent.

The province added that school divisions can also apply for additional funding through major and minor capital renewal programs for renovation projects.
