Drugs, phones valued at $138K seized at federal prison in Sask.

Correctional Services of Canada says officers seized packages containing illegal and unauthorized items at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.

According to CSC, the packages containing items including THC concentrate, hashish, tobacco, cell phones and chargers were discovered by staff on April 1.

CSC estimates the institutional value of the seizure at $138,550. Police have been notified and an investigation is underway.

The federal agency says it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions, including ion scanners and drug‑detector dogs that search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

CSC says it is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering federal prisons to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.

The agency says it is also working with police to take action against anyone attempting to introduce illegal items into correctional institutions.
