Semi hits highway overpass for 3rd straight week in Saskatchewan

A semi hauling an excavator strikes an overpass near Moose Jaw with minimal damage to the structure.

According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, a semi truck carrying an excavator heading south on Highway 39 hit an overpass on Trans-Canada Highway 1 east of Moose Jaw on Monday.

Police attended the scene, and no injuries were reported.

Crews with the Ministry of Highways determined no significant damage to the infrastructure from the collision.

The ministry is determining what repairs may need to be made.

“So, two of the hits, of course were in the city of Saskatoon,” Highways Minister Kim Gartner told reporters Tuesday.

“This last one was on the intersection of the bridge at Highway 1 and Highway 39. We will take a look at the permit that was issued. We’ll take a look and do an investigation into what happened. And, I haven’t heard from staff exactly where that is yet.”

Traffic is reportedly operating normally in the area, and motorists are reminded to check the Highway Hotline before heading out.

Monday’s crash was the third incident in as many weeks that saw a piece of machinery strike an overpass. Similar crashes were reported in March 7 and March 12 in Saskatoon.

Drivers are also reminded over-dimensional or overweight loads require a permit.
