Santa’s Anonymous providing Christmas gifts to Regina families

Donated toys are being handed out through Santa’s Anonymous, giving parents a chance to choose gifts for their kids ahead of Christmas. Wayne Mantyka has more.

For Akhtar Bibi Mohamad, choosing toys for her children from among 10,000 items donated through the Santa’s Anonymous program has made a meaningful difference for her family.

“This is very good for newcomers and low-income families,” she said. “They get to celebrate Christmas together. Some families don’t have enough income to buy gifts for their kids.”

In the past, toys were handed out already wrapped, leaving families unsure of what they would receive.

This year, parents can select gifts from rows of toys displayed at The Salvation Army.

“With 3,219 kids registered, and each receiving an average of three toys, that puts us right where we need to be,” said Lt. Tim Fraser of The Salvation Army. “We’re still a bit short on board games, but we’re hopeful we’ll make it.”

Families also receive a grocery gift card instead of a traditional food hamper, allowing them to choose what to serve for Christmas dinner or stock their pantries.

“We’ve transitioned more into a store model so families can come in and have the dignity of choosing toys for their kids,” said Miller. “They also receive a grocery gift card to a local store, whether that’s for a Christmas meal or everyday needs.”

Volunteers play a key role in making the program possible.

“It’s something my mom and I do together,” said volunteer Erica Marwick. “I even take time off work to help out. We absolutely love it.”

Toy donations are still being accepted at The Salvation Army until Wednesday, and cash donations can be made at Salvation Army kettles throughout the city.
