The Regina Red Sox will have a shot to defend their 2025 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) championship after clinching their position in the 2026 postseason Monday. Regina scored nine runs through the fourth and fifth innings to earn their playoff berth in a Monday win over the second-place Saskatoon Berries. With the game tied at two and the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Regina product Brady Bye smacked a single to right field to score two runs and give Regina the lead. The Red Sox would add two more runs in the inning. While Saskatoon would cut the lead in half in the bottom half, centre fielder Ian Montz pulled a two-run homerun to left field in the fifth to start a five-run rally. Catcher Matteo Pierre two RBI double into the centre field gap a few batters later gave Regina an 11-4 lead. The Red Sox wouldn’t look back and would not give up a run after the fifth to lock down a 13-5 win. All-Star Red Sox reliever David Gordon earned the winning decision pitching two inning out of the bullpen. With just three games remaining on the schedule, Regina (24-29) will not finish above .500 this season. Last season, Regina won their first WCBL championship since 2012 - and did it as the three seed in the East, sweeping the Mavericks in round 1, then squishing the record-breaking Berries in the East final to reach the league championship series. Winning both games on the road in Sylvan Lake, the Red Sox came back to claim their first league title in 13 years - winning all five of their road games through the playoffs. The Red Sox have all but locked in the East’s third seed again and seem destined to face their Highway 11 rival Berries in the East Division Semi-Final. Game 1 of that series would begin in Saskatoon at Cairns Field Friday. The series would turn back to Currie Field Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Down to the wire With the Red Sox locking in their postseason birth, just one playoff spot remains in the WCBL’s East. Medicine Hat currently holds the spot; however, the Weyburn Beavers are nipping at their heals. A split of a double header with Moose Jaw Monday kept the Beavers in the playoff hunt, 1.5 games back of the Mavericks. In order to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019, Weyburn must win each of their final three games of the regular season and get help from Swift Current – as Medicine Hat must lose both their final match-ups to the 57’s. The Beavers take on Saskatoon at home Tuesday night and finish the regular season with a weekday double header in Regina against the Red Sox. Millers roll to top seed Sitting comfortably atop the East Division are the Moose Jaw Miller Express, clinching the division’s regular season title with a franchise record 40 wins. By earning the number one seed, Moose Jaw will have home field advantage for both the division semi-finals and finals – should they reach that round. The Millers have rolled through this season on multiple record-breaking performances on the mound and at the plate. Earlier this season, shortstop Thomas Soto broke the single season record for stolen bases. On Sunday, Soto hit a three-run homerun to score his league-leading 71st run – breaking the WCBL record for runs scored in a season. The feat surpasses Soto’s 2025 record, when he scored 70 runs. Also on Sunday, star right-hander Westin Walls recorded eight strikeouts in just 2.2 innings, giving him 92 Ks on the season – another new WCBL single-season record. The previous record, held by Sylvan Lake’s Josh Tucker (91) was set in 2022. With the fourth seed yet to be decided, Moose Jaw is likely to face either Medicine Hat or Weyburn in the first round. That series will begin at Ross Wells Park Friday night.
