Buffalo return to Cowessess First Nation marks historic moment

After three years of work, 20 buffalo are released back to Cowessess First Nation, symbolizing renewal, hope, and food sustainability. Jacob Carr reports.

A sizeable crowd gathered Monday near the Cowessess First Nation powwow grounds as community members marked the return of buffalo to the Cowessess Plains.

Before the release, attendees sang an honour song to mark the moment the buffalo touched the land.

“We have our honor songs, we have our victory songs, we have our songs where we dance. And that drumbeat is the heartbeat of us and the heartbeat of that buffalo, it’s the same,” said Peepeekisis Cree Nation Headman Allan Bird.

Cowessess First Nation Councilor Headman Terry Lerat said the release follows over three years of work and partnership between Peepeekisis and Cowessess.

The buffalo were transported from Peepeekisis by truck before being released into their new habitat.

“This will be a safe area for the buffalo and for food sustainability for our people. The herd will build significantly enough that we will be able to provide food for our people in years to come,” said Lerat.

Bird said sharing part of Peepeekisis’ buffalo herd is part of a project launched in 2015 to support neighbouring First Nations communities.

Once the herd grows, Cowessess plans to share buffalo with another First Nation through the Buffalo Treaty Alliance.

Chief Erica Beaudin said the impact of the return was felt immediately.

“It’s already made a significant impact. It’s one of hope, it’s one of love, it’s one of respect, kindness. And all of those teachings that we grew up with as First Nations people.”

Beaudin said 20 buffalo were released, calling the day one of renewal, resurgence and a reconnection to cultural roots.
