Saanich police weren’t able to track down a cougar that was reported to them on Friday evening.

According to police, they received a call about an adult cougar being spotted in a backyard on Clovelly Court, near Cook and Quadra streets, around 7:50 p.m.

Two Saanich police officers searched the area and didn’t find the animal, therefore being unable to confirm there is one in the area.

The BC Conservation Service has been contacted by police.

Residents in the area should remain alert, police say.

The sighting comes one day after a jogger was attacked by a cougar near Port Hardy.

Officials say there has been an uptick in cougar sightings island-wide this summer.

Anyone who has an interaction with a cougar is asked to call the province’s RAPP line at 1-877-925-7277.
