Ottawa firefighters rescued an elderly woman trapped inside a townhome during a basement fire on Sunday morning. The Ottawa Fire Services says it received multiple 911 calls reporting heavy black smoke coming from the back of a two-storey, middle unit townhome in the 1400 block of Heatherington Road near Albion Road North at approximately 10:40 a.m. Firefighters working in “zero-visibility conditions” located the resident on the second floor and brought her outside. The woman was treated on scene before being transferred to the care of paramedics. Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps says the resident was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. Her injuries are not life-threatening, he said. The blaze was contained to the home and did not spread to the upper floors or other homes. The fire was extinguished shortly before 11:10 a.m. Two adults living in the home will be displaced because of the fire. The incident remains under investigation.
