Westgate Shopping Centre demolition underway

Demolition has begun at Ottawa’s oldest mall, Westgate Shopping Centre, which first opened in 1955. The site will be redeveloped with a plan for four residential towers.

Demolition has begun for Ottawa’s oldest mall.

The Westgate Shopping Centre, located on Carling Avenue near Merivale Road, officially closed its doors in the fall.

The mall first opened in 1955, and was home to stores like Freiman’s and Steinberg’s and housed the Westgate Cinema.

In October, Coun. Riley Brockington told CTV News Ottawa that the property is being redeveloped, with plans to add a grocery store as well and four residential towers.
