Stranded ATV rider found on Upper Ottawa Valley trail

An ATV rider is OK after spending several hours lost and stranded on the trails in the Upper Ottawa Valley.

Ontario Provincial Police say a man contacted police Monday evening, stating that his ATV became immobile and he was lost on the trails in Laurentian Hills Township.

Officers with the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment worked with the Renfrew Paramedic Services, including their Sierra Team, to locate the individual.

Police say the man was located by the OPP helicopter along the trails and picked up by crews on the ground.

He was assessed on the scene by paramedics and released.

The OPP officers the follow tips when planning a recreational activity or a wilderness trip:

• Know your limits. You should plan a trip or activity that matches your experience, skills and fitness level.
• Leave a route plan with a friend or family member with an expected return date. Tell them to contact the appropriate authority if you do not return on time and have not contacted them about any delays.
• Carry a cell phone
• Carry all necessary emergency equipment including a first-aid kit, extra food, water, a flashlight, warm clothing and a map of the area you are travelling in.
• Carry spare batteries for any GPS device and a map and compass for backup.
• Travel with an experienced friend or professional guide or take a course to improve your wilderness skills.
