Duck Mountain reopening to cottagers, some campers and visitors

A provincial park is reopening after flooded campsites forced an evacuation.

Duck Mountain Provincial Park is reopening for most visitors on Friday at 1 p.m., according to Manitoba Parks.

In a social media post, Manitoba Parks said day visitors, cottagers and commercial operators will be able to enter the park ahead of the weekend. Seasonal campers are being welcomed back, but those with shorter reservations will have to wait.

“Nightly campsites remain closed until July 23 while cleanup efforts and road repairs continue throughout the Parkland region,” the post said.

The park was evacuated Sunday. Campers and cottagers were given a two-hour window to be escorted out. Evacuees were forced to leave their trailers and boats behind.

Wednesday’s post said campers can pick them up on Friday between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., or call 204-734-3429 to make other arrangements.

“Respect barricades and use caution when travelling within the park as roads remain soft in some areas and rough sections are present.”

Manitoba Parks cautioned park access could change if more flooding issues arise.
