OPP lay arson charges following string of fires in Hawkesbury, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police say a man has been charged following a string of suspicious fires in Hawkesbury.

Police were called at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday on reports of four fires in the municipality and surrounding area.

OPP confirm the fires were all set outdoors and no one was injured.

The accused, a 37-year-old man from Alfred and Plantagenet, is facing a list of charges:

• Arson - disregard for human life
• Arson - damage to property - three counts
• Possession incendiary material
• Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court - four counts
• Resist peace officer
• Dangerous operation
• Operation while prohibited
• Possession break in instrument
• Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
• Possession of a schedule 1 substance - cocaine
• Possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking
• Owner operate motor vehicle without insurance
• Drive while under suspension
• Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed
• Operate unsafe vehicle
• Drive motor vehicle - no licence
• Drive motor vehicle - no plate
• Improper muffler - motor vehicle
• Disobey stop sign - fail to stop - community safety zone
• Fail to signal for turn - community safety zone

The man remains in custody and was scheduled to appear in court in L’Orignal on Monday.
