The average speed of drivers travelling through school zones at former photo radar locations in Ottawa was 5 km/h to 9 km/h faster in September compared to the same month last year, according to new data. The City of Ottawa continues to collect speed data at the eight original automated speed enforcement camera locations after the Ontario government banned the cameras last November. Data released by the city shows the average speed was 9 km/h faster in September at the former photo radar camera locations on Innes Road, Meadowlands Drive and Smyth Road compared to a year ago. The average speed recorded at the former photo radar camera location on Innes Road, between Provence Avenue and Trim Road, was 63 km/h in September, compared to 54 km/h in September 2025. The data shows 35 per cent of drivers complied with the speed limit in September. On Smyth Road, the average speed recorded at the former photo radar location was 49 km/h last month, compared to 40 km/h in September 2025. The data shows the camera location on Smyth Road had the highest compliance rate, with 57 per cent of drivers following the posted speed limit in September. The average speed on Meadowlands Drive, between Winthrow Avenue and Thatcher Street, was 44 km/h in September, compared to 35 km/h in September 2024. The data shows that more than 50 per cent of drivers did not follow the posted speed limit at six of the eight former photo radar locations in September. Meadowlands Drive had the lowest compliance rate, at 31 per cent, while only 33 per cent of drivers followed the speed limit at the former automated speed enforcement camera locations on Longfields Drive and Watters Road. The city was operating 60 photo radar cameras when the Ontario government ordered all cameras to be turned off, with plans to install another 24 cameras. A total of 1,143,240 speeding tickets were issued through Ottawa’s automated speed enforcement camera program between July 2020 and November 2025, including 279,595 tickets in 2025 and 383,830 tickets in 2024.
