28K fewer road trips from eastern Ontario to New York State in first 3 months of 2026

There were approximately 28,000 fewer vehicle trips across the Canada-U.S. border from eastern Ontario to New York State during the first three months of the year, including 4,000 fewer trips in the month of March.

Statistics from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection show there were 340,000 conveyances at the U.S. border locations at Alexandria Bay, Massena and Ogdensburg in January, February and March, down from 368,000 trips during the same three-month period in 2025.

The three U.S. border crossings in western New York State connecting with eastern Ontario have seen a drop in border crossings since February 2025.

In March, there were 122,000 conveyances at the three border crossings, down from 126,000 in March 2025 and 149,000 crossings in March 2024. The statistics show there were 107,000 border crossings from eastern Ontario to New York State in February, down from 113,000 trips in February 2025 and 130,000 in February 2024.

The Thousand Islands Bridge, connecting Alexandria Bay, New York and Lansdowne, Ont. continues to see the largest drop in cross-border trips.

There were 39,600 conveyances at the Alexandria Bay crossing in March, down from 42,000 crossings in March 2025 and 57,000 crossings in March 2024. The data shows there were 33,900 conveyances to Alexandria Bay from Lansdowne, Ont. in February, down from 38,800 crossings in February 2025 and 33,500 crossings in January.

At the Ogdensburg, New York border crossing at the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, there were 16,400 conveyances in March (17,000 in March 2025), 14,000 conveyances in February (16,600 trips in February 2025), and 14,300 conveyances in January (19,500 trips in January 2025).

At the land border crossings from Cornwall and Akwesasne to Massena, New York, there were 66,300 conveyances in March, down from 66,600 in March 2025. The number of trips from Cornwall to Massena increased in February, with 59,400 trips in February 2025 compared to 57,900 trips in February 2024.

There have been fewer trips across the Canada-U.S. border from eastern Ontario to New York State every month since February 2025 amid the tariff war between Canada and the United States and the low Canadian dollar.
