Woman charged with impaired, vehicle theft, fleeing police, driving while suspended

A 34-year-old woman from a First Nation in northwestern Ontario has been charged with criminal and driving-related offences following an incident April 6.

Ontario Provincial Police from Thunder Bay, with help from the Fort William Anishinabek Police Service, were conducting a patrol around 11:15 a.m. in Fort William when the automatic licence plate reader registered a hit for a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle and driver were eventually taken into custody. The woman from the First Nation Territory of Fort William is charged with fleeing police, possession of property obtained by crime, failing to comply with a release order, dangerous driving and impaired driving.

Driving while suspended

Highway Traffic Act charges include driving while suspended, using a plate not authorized for the vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt.

The accused remains in custody ahead of a bail hearing April 8 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay.

“Members of the public are urged to report impaired driving by calling 911 in emergency situations,” police said.

“Complaints of impaired, aggressive or careless driving can also be made by calling 1-888-310-1122.”
