Transport driver charged with stunt driving in northwestern Ont.

A 30-year-old tractor-trailer driver from Winnipeg has been charged with stunt driving in the northwestern Ontario community of Terrace Bay, one of two drivers charged with the offence this week.

Police said officers stopped the truck as it sped through town, driving 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone at 12:26 a.m. on May 12.

A member of the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police used a radar device on the white Freightliner Cascadia truck as it sped through the community.

The Winnipeg driver was charged with stunt driving, careless driving and failing to stop for an emergency vehicle.

The tractor-trailer was impounded for two weeks and the trucker’s licence was automatically suspended for 30 days.

Vehicle travelling 159 km/h

The following day, police in Nipigon clocked a 51-year-old driver from Prince Albert, Sask., travelling 159 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

OPP stopped the white Honda CRV around 8:40 p.m. as it travelled on Highway 11-17.

In addition to stunt driving charges, the suspect’s vehicle was impounded for two weeks and their driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 30 days.

Both suspected stunt drivers will have to appear in court on a later date, police said.

“The OPP remains committed to taking aggressive drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education,” police said in a news release May 14.

“If you suspect that someone is driving aggressively, it is important to call 911 to report it.”
