When it comes to hockey highlights, it doesn’t get much better for the Soo Greyhounds’ Carter George. George, who is just 19-years-old and played for Team Canada and the U18 and World Juniors, has now made history in the Ontario Hockey League by scoring his second goalie goal. “I knew they pulled their goalie early, they pulled it with four minutes left and I knew I was going to get a chance eventually, so it kind of just worked out,” George said, speaking with CTV News. “There was a lot of thoughts going into it, when I shot it, I wasn’t too sure I would get through everyone … I wanted to jump and scream but I had to wait until it hit the back of the net first.” He said once he saw the light go off the back of the net, excitement set in – but this was not his first brush with having a goalie goal, which officials will tell you is a rare feat unto itself. In his first OHL game, while he was the netminder for the Owen Sound Attack against the Peterborough Petes, he also accomplished the rare feat. “It’s pretty cool to hold the record in the OHL, not many guys get to do that so it’s definitely pretty cool,” he said. Perhaps one of the most remarkable details of the feat is that George had only been living in Sault Ste. Marie for a week and a half when he scored on Wednesday against the London Knights. The newest Greyhound told CTV News that his phone has been blowing up ever since. “All the fans have been going nuts for me, it’s pretty cool to see and this community has been pretty welcoming here to me,” said George. “Just to see someone not do it once, but twice, is super special. He’s paving the way to hopefully score a lot more and I told him the one thing that pissed me off is that he now has one more goal that I do,” said the team’s goalie coach, Mark Visentin. “We were tied going into the game and he has now surpassed me but yeah the opportunity itself is rare.” Visentin said there is so much history at the GFL Memorial Gardens, it’s cool to witness. It also comes almost one year to the day of their last goalie goal with goaltender Nolan Lalonde. “I think we all sense there is a buzz around the team, an excitement, and when you have a goalie of Carter George’s calibre come in, it gives a boost to the team and when you do make a mistake, it’s okay cause you know Georgie’s got your back,” said Visentin. “I just want to get a championship and go out on that,” said George. “The group of guys has been really welcoming and nothing but incredible to me since I got here.”
