New traffic calming measures coming to Sudbury roads

Greater Sudbury will use revenue from its previous automated speed cameras to fund 8 new speed humps and bollards on 12 local roads in 2026.

Thanks to funds from the former automated speed camera program, Greater Sudbury is adding eight permanent speed humps, aiming to slow traffic in problem areas.

The new humps bring the total in the city to 13. In addition, 12 more roads will have bollards installed, bringing that total to more than 40.

David Knutson, the city’s manager of traffic and transportation, said installing bollards is the most cost-effective measure to slow traffic.

“We’ve been monitoring for the last few years since we started installing them and we’ve been seeing good success,” Knutson said.

“The average speed reduction that we saw in 2025 was only two kilometers per hour, but the highest road did see a reduction and of 8.5 km an hour. And it’s sort of operating speed.”

Bollards are particularly effective in slowing down high-speed drivers, he added.

Ward 8 Coun. Al Sizer said the most common calls he receives are from residents concerned about speeding.

“Since the completion of Maley Drive, there’s been an increase in traffic on Lansing Avenue, but we’ve responded with temporary bollards,” Sizer said.

“But those temporary bollards will be removed in 2026 … because there was going to be a road construction on Lansing Avenue. The temporary measures will be removed and permanent measures will be included.”

The eight roadways that will receive permanent traffic calming are:

• Brenda Drive (Moonrock Avenue to St Charles Lake Road)
• Lansing Avenue (Lasalle Boulevard to Maley Drive)
• Grandview Boulevard (Montrose Avenue to Moss Street)
• Bancroft Drive (Kingsway to Bellevue Avenue)
• King Street (Morin Avenue to Notre Dame Avenue)
• Kelly Lake Road (Southview Drive to Copper Street)
• Robinson Drive (Kelly Lake Road and Southview Drive)
• Auger Avenue (Lasalle Boulevard to Falconbridge Road)

The bollards are installed every spring after street sweeping and line painting is complete. The speed humps are being designed currently and will be installed during the 2026 construction season.
