A 26-year-old M’Chigeeng man has been charged with 13 offences following a police investigation into allegations of intimate partner violence on Manitoulin Island. “On Aug. 26, UCCM officers received information regarding an intimate partner violence incident involving the accused,” UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service said in a news release. As a result of the tip, the Indigenous police service said various units commenced an investigation. Arrest at RIDE checkpoint As the investigation progressed, police said officers obtained judicial authorizations and continued efforts to locate the suspect. On Sept. 1, the accused was located and arrested after entering a RIDE checkpoint on Highway 6 in Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation. Charges laid The man has been charged with two counts of spousal assault, two counts of forcible confinement, assault causing bodily harm – choke, suffocate or strangle, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, criminal harassment, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, along with theft, mischief and failing to comply with a probation order. The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing and was subsequently released by the presiding Justice of the Peace on a release order with conditions. The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 22. “The allegations contained in the charges have not been proven in court,” police stated.
