A long-time charter member from Sudbury marked the start of her term as the Rotary Club’s District 7010 governor in an underground ‘pinning’ ceremony Saturday. Sandi Campbell has been a Rotarian for more than 33 years, Sudbury Sunrisers president Mick Weaver said in a news release. She is the first to represent the city’s breakfast club at the district level and will also be supporting more than 1,500 members from 53 different clubs located in central and northeastern Ontario and northwestern Quebec. This includes 43 Rotary clubs, seven Rotaract clubs and three interact clubs, which all serve their local communities along with the organization’s global projects and initiatives. Rotary International is the world’s oldest service organization made up of 500 districts. Campbell’s pinning ceremony was held 22 metres (70 ft) underground at Sudbury’s interactive earth sciences and mining museum called Dynamic Earth. The unique event is believed to be a first for the club. “I am very proud of my hometown,” Campbell is quoted as saying in a June 7 news release. “What better place to celebrate my passion for Rotary service than to invite guests from across our district to a renowned science centre next to a Sudbury landmark (the big nickel).” District 7010 was formed in 1955. Campbell’s term will last one year, ending in June 2026. " We are very proud of her success and look forward to supporting the unique fundraising events and service projects she has planned throughout her year," Weaver said.
