David Orazietti is retiring from his position as president of Sault College, the school’s board of governors confirmed Wednesday. In a statement to CTV News, the board said Orazietti “made a personal decision to retire.” “The board thanks Mr. Orazietti for his contributions to Sault College throughout his tenure,” the statement said. “The board also reaffirms that Sherri Smith will continue to serve as interim president until further notice. The board has full confidence in president Smith’s leadership and ability to guide the college during this period of transition.” On personal leave Orazietti has been on personal leave since at least July, when Smith was appointed interim president. The former Sault MPP made headlines in 2024 when he got into a public spat with Conestoga College president John Tibbits, who reportedly hurled insults at him following comments Orazietti made about Conestoga’s impact on the federal government’s decision to cap international student enrollment. When asked about reports that Orazietti was under investigation for unspecified actions that occurred while he was president, the board said those inquiries are no longer active. “All past investigations related to college matters and David Orazietti have now concluded,” the statement said. “No further action is required, and the college considers these matters closed.” “The board of governors remains focused on supporting our students, staff and the broader community as Sault College continues to move forward with stability and commitment to its mission.”
