A Victoria neighbourhood will get a lot more crowded this weekend with the addition of 100 chickens – but some in the neighbourhood are beaking off about the new feathered tenants.

There are currently five chickens living on a two-acre Rockland property, but that will change Saturday when 100 chickens move in.

People living next door to the rooming house are upset and say the sudden construction of three chicken coups is “ugly.”

They are also concerned over health issues.

“The amount of waste, the chicken waste, the scraps … it’ll stink and also it’s going to attract vermin. It’s just going to be a real public health menace,” said Phil Cavert, who lives in the area.

The owner of the property says she will hand out free eggs to all her tenants, most of whom are low income.

However, the animals may not be allowed to stick around for long. Victoria city council passed a motion on Thursday, limiting the number of chickens per yard to 12 hens.

If the motion becomes a bylaw it will mean most of the chickens will have to go.
